Superhydrophobic Materials - The Azores Yam Leaf

In December 2010, a class of 16 students from the 9th grade (14 and 15 year olders) carried out the Experiment D.
In the first task, the students had to check if the Taro or Azores Yam leaf (Colocasia esculenta) had superhydrophobic properties. The Azores Yam is a very abundant plant in the Azores, in fact it’s one of the most important agricultural crops in the region.
In the second one, they had to know, test and experiment nanomaterials that had been modified to nano-scale to become superhydrophobic, such as Nano-Tex fabric.
